QUEUE Gallery is pleased to present Closed For Storm, the first Miami solo exhibition by artist Alex Breaux. Breaux is based in Miami, Florida, where she was predominantly raised after her family relocated from New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Her earliest inclinations toward painting have consistently stemmed from a desire to preserve and revisit the past through a tender and optimistic perspective. In Closed For Storm, Breaux explores the interplay between abstraction and representation through the tension between static and dynamic forms, allowing memory, movement, and stillness to coexist within the same pictorial space.
Whereas the title of the exhibition may allude to destruction, conversations with Breaux instead characterize the familiar phrase with a sense of kindred nostalgia: a corner store turning its sunset-toned OPEN sign inward, replacing it with a handwritten note in Sharpie on printer paper reading, Closed For Storm. For many, the phrase evokes moments of struggle, but just as readily, the memories we choose to let linger instead. With a softer disposition, her paintings linger on the landscape once it recovers, the corner store still standing each summer she returns to New Orleans as a teenager, and the sun-faded South Florida strip mall signage passed time and time again.
Like the cedar chest filled with trinkets and photographs her father has collected over the years, Breaux has also become a keeper of time and place. Through her image-making process, she first layers photographs from her personal archive digitally, preserving fragments that might otherwise fade. Her paintings become meditations on place and belonging, weaving together personal history with broader reflections on our relationship to landscape, memory, and identity.
Alex Breaux (b. 1998, New Orleans, LA) is an artist based in Miami, FL. She holds both a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Florida International University. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions across the United States and abroad, including Toxic Arts Gallery in London, UK; the Patricia & Philip Frost Art Museum, Pan American Art Projects, Oolite Arts, Miami Visual Art Gallery, Laundromat Art Space, and A1A Project Space, among others. Breaux is the recipient of the Faena Art Curatorial Studies Scholarship (2022) and the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Visual Art Scholarship (2024). Her work is held in several private collections, as well as the collection of the Delano Hotel, Miami Beach.
